Put me in, Coach!

Little League season is officially underway here in London. Matt is playing for the Kentucky Auto Exchange team, which is cool, because the shirt and hat have a car on them. It's definitely cooler than playing for the Dr. Johnson Dentist team, but not as cool as the Wild Willie's Fireworks team. Maybe we'll get that one next year.

In a late breaking development, Charles agreed to coach Matt's team. I think that coaching thirteen three- and four-year olds will be the true test of his commitment to quitting smoking. So far it is going well, in an organized chaos cat-herding kind of way. The kids are surprisingly skilled; most of them have older siblings who play on other teams, so they all seem to know how to field the ball well, and one of them can hit the ball way into the outfield. He's our ringer. Of course, we've also had a few kids melt down about not getting to bat all the time, or the fact that the uniforms are not pink, or the second baseman standing too close to the base runner ("He's on MY BASE!"). And Matt, in typical Matt fashion, is usually doing his own thing - he's not too interested in actually playing baseball yet. He's fairly content to stand in the outfield and hit the fence with a bat. But, he does love to hit the ball off the tee and run the bases (albeit in the wrong direction), and he treasures his batting helmet. As long as he's having fun, we're going to let him keep playing.

Today was team picture day. All of the teams are coed and the kids looked truly adorable. The uniforms swallow most of them whole, and all the girls have cute ponytails and pink gloves. I don't have our official team pictures yet, but as soon as they mail them out I will post them. Here are some we took at home beforehand.

Our fancy team uniforms:

SAFE!

Team pictures were taken at the fire station, so Matt got to stand on a fire truck afterwards - he was a little leery of the experience.

With his ginormous batting helmet, which is actually a size XS:

We have our first actual game on Thursday. I'll be sure to keep you all posted on our ongoing Wee Ball adventures!
