And they're off!

Ever since I was old enough to watch the Derby on television I'd wanted to go to the track and witness a horse race. Throw in a couple of decades of dedicated Dick Francis reading, and going racing was easily in the top 5 on my life to-do list. So, it was with great anticipation that I planned our trip to Keeneland this week for the fall meet.

And happily, the day met every expectation. We had the perfect weather - high sixties, beautiful blue skies, lots of gorgeous fall foliage highlighting the horse farms on the way to the track. Since it was a weekday, the crowd was relatively small, and we were able to secure a viewing spot on the rail. Matt, as always, charmed random strangers, thanks in no small part to his dapper race day hat. He was delighted to see the horses in such close proximity and liked picking a favorite for each race by their numbers. Charles wagered on a horse ridden by Calvin Borel, which promptly lost, but we forgave Calvin since he's Cajun and thus crazy and lovable. It was a great day, one of those rare occasions where the dream meets the reality and is totally satisfied.
