All right, so I'm woefully behind on the blogging. The end of the school year and its craziness, and then the sheer laziness of summer vacation have conspired to keep me away from the blog. I'm going to attempt to get caught up before school starts again in, oh, six weeks. Where has the summer gone already?
The end of the school year was a blur. Matt's school waited to pack a year's worth of activities into a three week period, which made life busy around here.
First there was the carnival and pinewood derby. Matt and Charles worked hard to craft a pinewood derby car, and Matt was excited to race it. It was, of course, driven by a Lego guy. He didn't win, but did come in second, which was respectable for his first time. The highlight of the carnival for me was the appearance of Matt's principal in the dunking booth. In fact, this may be the highlight of my whole summer.

Then there was Field Day and the end of year awards ceremony. When I was in school, Field Day meant relay races, games, marble shooting, and trying to climb a greased flag pole. Field Day now is apparently just an excuse to play on the playground all day long and then drink Coke at school. Matt used the occasion of Field Day to proclaim his love for a girl in his class, using sidewalk chalk to write "Matt + Belle = Love." No word yet on how Belle feels about this.

At the awards ceremony, he received several awards, including one for outstanding reading achievement. He was deservedly pretty proud of himself for that one.

The school year thus ended on a high note, and I have hopes that next year will be even better. It's hard to believe that my boy will be a first grader in the fall. School supply lists are already out in the stores, driving that reality home even when I would prefer to ignore it. Where has the summer gone already?
